"Frederick" Puppet Show and Interactive Felt Board

"Frederick" Puppet Show & Storyboard
This project started as a puppet show based on Leo Lionni's book "Frederick," winner of the Caldecott Honor, New York Times Best Illustrated Book of the Year, and Library of Congress Children’s Book of the Year, among other accolades. This book has always been close to my heart because it is at its core about how the arts help us survive trying times. I adore Lionni's bold, whimsical collage artwork.
I sewed the puppets, built the puppet theater, and crafted all of the props and sets. Two puppeteers and I performed the "Frederick" puppet show (I narrated) at Throat Art Collective's "My 5th Birthday Party" group show at Secret Project Robot in 2012.
In 2020, I adapted the puppet show into a felt board toy for my young nephew to play with. My aim was to make something interactive that could help him have fun learning about reading, storytelling, and the natural world. As the mice progress across the felt panel, the season change like they do in the book, allowing the child to follow along with an adult reading the story.
